green day blows. ha ha ha, i said it.

ya, so my pet peeve lately is that little greenday band. Don't get me wrong, there was a time when they were my favorite band... when i was in grade 8. But lately I don't understand why everyone thinks they're so great? because they're political? Political is sorta the 'in' thing right now. what about bands that were political way before sept. 11 like rage against the machine, or 80% of old school punk bands. not to mention that when you compare a 'political' greenday song to let's say; a political system of a down song, it makes green day songs look like a political pacifier. let me give you an example:
GREENDAY parts of HOLIDAY:
"Zieg Heil to the president gas, man,
Bombs away is your punishment,
Pulverize the Eiffel towers,
Who criticize your government,
Bang, Bang goes the broken glass and,
Kill all the fags that don't agree,
Trials by fire setting fire,
Is not a way that's meant for me,
Just cause,
Just cause because we're outlaws, yeah!"

ok, so greenday has some decent stuff here, commenting on americas homophobia and they the government turns on people that go against them. it's clear that greenday watches CNN. good for them. now lets try somthing different
SYSTEM OF A DOWN parts of PRISON SONG
"Following the rights movements
You clamped on with your iron fists,
Drugs became conveniently
Available for all the kids,
Nearly 2 million Americans are incarcerated
In the prison system,
Prison system of the U.S.
Minor drug offenders fill your prisons
You don't even flinch
All our taxes paying for your wars
Against the new non-rich,
The percentage of Americans in the prison system
Prison system, has doubled since 1985
All research and successful drug policy show
That treatment should be increased,
And law enforcement decreased,
While abolishing mandatory minimum sentences
Utilizing drugs to pay for secret wars around the world,
Drugs are now your global policy,
Now you police the globe,
Drug money is used to rig elections,
And train brutal corporate sponsored
Dictators around the world."

OK, so i was a little biased towards system of a down and posted more of their lyrics, but reading parts of this system of a down song is more like reading a research paper. I mean I hope we can assume that these stats are correct. by listening to a system of a down song, i've actually learned somthing new... now thats a political song (and you know you're hardcore when you start quoting statistics in the middle of a hardcore song).

now there's also the argument about whether or not greenday has sold out. I'll be honest, I don't really care because I think in order to sell out you have to stand for something. Rappers doing movies isn't selling out because most main stream rappers sing about getting money and women, and doing movies helps you to achieve that. but doesn't it strike anyone that greenday, who used to wear things like t-shirts and jeans, or whatever else they happened to be wearing to shows and interviews, now have changed their image? for the past 3(?) videos they've had the exact same look (billy's black eyed, black suite and red tie, tre's little fashion mohawk) and they haven't changed for the videos or interviews. They're not just selling music anymore, they're selling an image too now (this is where i would call them sell outs if I felt that they had somthing to sell out from). yet another victory for the MTV generation (thats sarcasm). music is about sound, not appearance
